"Why self-regulation? With the advent of such concepts as design for the environment, industrial ecology, and the recognized enlightened self-interest that voluntary compliance brings, it is in any company's best interest to avoid fines, liabilities, and bad publicity." This is Iannuzzi's basic assertion and how could anyone find fault with how well it has worked over the past 20 years? Is there a shining approach among his examples that will lead us to a better world? Well, the past two decades have helped sort out the self-starters from the recalcitrant companies. Thus, Ianuzzi's assertion has been borne out with regard to the former but the laggards are still not being forced out and with current lax enforcement, this theory is several significant steps away from reality. The USA's government programs that he cites as examples are long-gone. There is little about their failures that Iannuzzi seems capable of foreshadowing. So, let's put this one back on the shelf and leave it to environmental archeologists to reassemble its bones, if humans survive the climate crisis.
