A surprisingly detailed look at Governor Zespedes work in East Florida during the 2nd Spanish Period. I particularly enjoyed the familiar views and flavors of St. Augustine that still resonate over 200 years later. There's a section about the celebration of the new Spanish King and Queen that details the complete parade route through the city, and I could picture it completely in my mind. All the same streets are still there, as are many of the same buildings. To this day, St. Augustinians will happily throw a parade at the drop of a hat (and, in fact, when our Christmas parade this year was cancelled due to lack of funding, organizations throughout town rose to the challenge and got it back on the calendar in less than 6 hours). It stirs something in me to think that this beloved town, no matter the politics or nationality or allegiance, will always remain true to itself, and it gladdens me to see something of a social DNA passing down through the years that keeps the spirit of this area alive.

A wonderful overview of a historical figure who is largely unknown within both the history of the United States and New Spain. My only minor criticism with the book was the layout of chapters which instead of following a clear chronological order tended to jump around from year to year making some events difficult to place.
