I found this story to be very interesting because in the Notes before the story the author explained that this story was set in the 1950's and it was a time when pollution in the water was really bad which was devastating to the oyster beds for the locals. This book offers a great opportunity for discussion about how things have changed since the time that the book took place. It would also be good to discuss with the students about how the language has changed. The text in this book mixed with African and English. Some of the grammar is wrong but I believe this to be on purpose to make it seem like the characters are real people. This book is a great tool for teaching children about other cultures.
