Review # 1 was written on 2011-06-04 00:00:00 Glen Olfert I found this book to be a good overview of the Oder river battles, and the breakthrough to Berlin. The author has throughly researched the campaign. There is a lot of information here. The story of the battle is interlaced with first person accounts, from common soldiers and officers, all the way to top Generals. There are quite a few accounts of interesting actions that happened in the battle. I did find the book to drag at times for me. The author talks a lot about all the troop movements. This is good from an informational and a reference point, but can bog things down a bit. I thought the maps a bit hard to read as well. I also wish there had been more first person accounts. ESpecially from the Soviet side. Most Russian accounts tend to be from Zhukov, and other high ranking Soviet officers. All in all a good book on a battle that does not have many books available written about it. |
