A very good book to know about Japanese nationalism which has undergone a sea change after the Second World War. Unlike the self-determined, state-oriented nationalism of prewar period which led them to modernize and adopt western thoughts to reinvent Japan and modernize it, nationalism found in postwar Japan is sociocultural nationalism which is not synthesized with the state. There is group cohesion that can be seen derived out of social consciousness among people but not by political coercion. An easy to read book.
