Review # 1 was written on 2021-02-06 00:00:00 Bianca Wilson I was hoping for more of a philosophical perspective by Tolstoy on education, but this is largely an account of the daily activities that took place at the school he created. While reading it many of his thoughts about the student work sounded familiar though, making me come to the realization that those like myself and Tolstoy, that prioritize artistic abilities over learning specific standards, may not be suited for traditional school teaching. Ever. And that's okay. There is always a need for alternatives for students. |
Review # 2 was written on 2017-01-05 00:00:00 Mark Van Heugten So far I'm enjoying this book, much more than I thought I would. It's primarily comprised of Tolstoy's piece The School at Yasnaya Polyana with other, shorter essays included. I bought this book because I learned that my husband's great-grandfather was a teacher at this school and knew Tolstoy, so I thought it would be interesting to learn more about it. What's interesting is that now, during the lockdown when I am homeschooling my daughter, I am finding a lot of what Tolstoy relates to be helpful to me and I want to incorporate some of his style into our lives. |
