A+ I LOVE Ana Mendieta. I first discovered Mendieta when there was a huge show at the Whitney - I think I spent more time at the Whitney than I have any other visit. Her work just blows me away. Sadly, it's a book, so you don't have the power that is in many of her videos, but there's amazing stills, writings on her process. It's strictly focused on her art and its progression (with minor life details), with lots of amazing full-color photos. Mendieta experimented with "sileutas" and "earth body figures." I love her temporary art, how she modifies the earth to be part of her art. Highly recommended.

I've long been fascinated by the art of Andy Goldsworthy, who works with natural materials in the environment, often on a large scale. Until I pulled this book from the library shelf, I had never heard of Ana Mendieta, a Cuban-American artist whose work in the late 1970s and early 1980s was remarkably similar in its use of materials, photographic documentation and setting. This retrospective of Mendieta's body of work is based on films, slides, negatives, and other documents from her private collection, selected by Olga Viso of the Walker Art Center. I was moved by Mendieta's work, and highly recommend this book to anyone interested in the visual arts. It's given me a lot to think about.
