The tale of Queen Cāmadevī is a rendering of a northern Thai folk legend dealing with a Mon woman who founded the first important city-state in what is now northern Thailand. It consists of 15 cantos (chapters) with the fourth canto being the most important one because it brings to light the fact that Cāmadevī was consecrated as the first queen of the city-state known as Haribhuñjaya (Hariphunchai or หริภุญชัย). It had been a Mon kingdom in the north of modern Thailand in the centuries before several Tai ethnic tribes moved from China into the area of what is now Thailand. Although it is a poem that can be understood as a complex sequence of narrative compositions where historical facts struggle to get free of the noose of myths and legends, it is also a valuable source of information on the Pāli language and its history because Bodhiraṃsi mentioned Pāli as a language name in a clear and detailed manner. In short, Sommai Premchit(co-author) and Donald K. Swearer (translator) have done a good job.

A popular work among undergraduate anthropology students, and for good reason. Like Karen McCarthy Brown's "Mama Lola", it contains reflexive anthropology, as the ethnographer is both friend and observer of her interlocutors. Feminists who view Islam as a religion oppressive of women should read this for an alternative perspective that comes from the heart of Muslim women themselves. The most fascinating segment of this ethnography is the discussion of Bedouin men and women's use of spoken poetry to cope with their disappointments and high hopes for love, relationships, sexuality and gender ideology. It is a bit romantic.
