Characters: 3 There were not a lot of characters in this book because it is a non-fiction book; the few characters in this book were described very well the quote "Ariel Merari, a psychologist by profession, is one of Israel;s top hostage negotiators. I have learned from him the set of purposes, choices, factual variations and lessons of history that govern when terrorists have taken hostages." (Heymann 37). In short all the quote is saying is all the good and wise traits the this man has. I did really enjoy the characters in this book, it is really cool to learn about real people and how they reacted in certain situations. " In 1978, terrorists of the left kidnapped Italy's Christian Democratic party leader, Aldo Moro, and hid him for a prolonged period before killing him" (Haymann 38). Even though that is a little gruesome it was kind of interesting to see how they reacted to what was happening around them. The characters in this book are definetly believebly because they are actually real people but also because you can relate on what they are going through from the emotion of fear to feeling of triumph. Language: 3 I rated this a three because even though he gave a lot of good information he used very large words that were sometimes hard to understand. From a teenagers perspective it was not a lot of fun to read. For example " As such, they are on the radical fringe of Islamic beliefs. Virtually all believing Muslims consider their scripture the literal word of God; they thus qualify as fundamentalists." (Heymann xv). In my opinion that sentence was not a very fun sentence to read. He uses very sophisticated language that kind of gets annoying. Over all I think the language of this book takes away from the quality of the text and information. The tone he uses is very anti-terrorism and wants terrorism to end. "What is far clearer is the evidence of a boost in domestic morale and international influence following the military action. U.S. citizens do not want to feel powerless against the attacks of terrorists groups." (Haymann 75). Information: 5 This book gave a lot of very clear information about terrorism and its effects. The explanation of terrorism was very effective and taught me a lot." From the terrorists' perspective, the major force of terrorism comes not from its physical impact but from its psychological impact."(Haymann 9) This book could not have been written with a plot line, It was filled with different events in history and different attacks and facts about terrorism. Titles such as: "The Politics of Violence" (Haymann 9). and "The Limits of Unilateral Action" (Haymann 48). These titles could not easily be put into a story. Theme: 4 The theme of this book is Terrorism and how there is always a way to prevent it. The Title " Terrorism And America A Commonsense Strategy For A Democratic Society"(Heymann Title). This was a great choice for the title of the book. This book was full of strategy and events on how to defend against terrorism. The book is all about informing us on terrorism and it's effects. "For a country as powerful as the United States, with so much at stake in resisting terrorist threats and encouraging allies to resist those threats". (Haymann 43) This quote represents the overall theme of the book. Personal Response: Personally this book was not my favorite because of the big and wordy language it used it was very hard to get through and for that reason I did not like it that much, even though it was full of good information. If I was to recommend this book it would have to be to an older friend who enjoys big long and wordy sentences and also enjoys learning new things.

Heymann calls for "thoughtful common sense" in order battle terrorism Key to developing anti-terror resources is to make them dual-use, so they can be used even when there is no terror. The Israelis have developed flexibility in terrorist hostage situations - in Israel they conduct an armed rescue, in hostile country they negotiate, and in a friendly country they let that country take the lead Grabbing a person in a foreign country and bringing them here (as with Kansi in 1997 - FBI took him in Pakistan and brought to US - had killed 2 CIA officers) is not violation of our law, just theirs - so a diplomatic issue Don't overreact
