That was quite possibly the toughest read I have ever been through. Picture that: architecture theory meet Frankfurt school and post-structuralism. Despite having read quite a bit on the "death of the subject" in French theory, the wide range of references mobilized by the author was all too often lost on me, and I suppose I would have to seat in a library to make good of the book. The argument is concerned with rehabilitating two modernist architects who have been relegated, along with a number of other creatives associated with the german avant-garde "Neue Sachlichkeit", to the long shadow of totalitarianism. They certainly play with the concept, pushing the concern with norms and measures, uniformity and mechanical functionalism which animated much of the 1920s, beyond our liberal comfort-zone, and develop a willingly inhumane world of concrete and repetition. I will not go into the details but Hays argues that this fulfill a double function, one criticizing the reifying logic of consumer capitalism, and the other developing the titular "posthumanist subject", free of the mythic substance of the liberal self, but also able to act and to effect change. The hard-hitting philosophical argument is peppered with analyses of artworks and buildings, rather than the other way around, and surely at the time of his writing the book, Hays might have thought the then obscure term of "Posthumanist" would be enough to deter any dilettante from entering his twilit zone - today the term has gained much popularity so I feel I should point out: do not expect quotations from Blade Runner.

If you aren’t already familiar with Accounting, then it is better to read this book augmented with class instruction and the connect supporting interface through McGraw Hill. I am hanging onto this book for after when it will probably be a great help on any accounting or managerial job.
