Review # 1 was written on 2009-07-28 00:00:00 Adam Black This is a rich book, and especially the last essay is extremely dense with insight. Ameriks discusses constellation research, in which we locate philosophical ideas in a historical context. We need to find a balance between systematic and ahistorical concerns that seek to find foundationalist principles, and more personal and relativistic concerns that deny absolute truth and root everything in a historical perspective. Ameriks notes that in a post-Kuhnian age we need to be less ambitious than the ahistorical systems of Descartes and Plato, that seek to root metaphysics in some absolute principle, but that we cannot also embrace the nihilistic relativism of Kant's student, Herder. Ideas from the past can reveal part of who we are, as we realize that we can gain a clearer understanding of our own concepts from the way concepts were articulated in the past. Philosophy has taken a historical turn because there are ancestral concepts that illuminate the roots of current systems.

Review # 2 was written on 2011-07-25 00:00:00 Brian Decker مطالعه این کتاب، برای من تجربه بسیار شیرینی بود. نویسنده ابعاد مختلف فلسفه هگل را به شکلی جامع، در بستر تاریخی خودش و در فصول مجزا مورد بررسی قرار داده است. در این بررسی‌ها، آرای منتقدان را نیز مطرح کرده و به آن‌ها پاسخ می‌دهد. بیزر در همراهی یا مخالفت با منتقدان، به شکل استادانه‌ای در فلسفه هگل عمیق می‌شود و قوت و ضعف‌های آن را بیرون می‌کشد و در برابر تفسیرهای تقلیل‌گرا می‌ایستد. از آن‌جا که نویسنده آرای هگل را در بستر زمانه خودش شرح می‌دهد، نسبت آن را با فلاسفه دیگری نظیر کانت، یا رمانتیک‌ها و حتی به شکل محدودی با فلاسفه اگزیستانسیالیست، مثل کیرکگور، مشخص می‌کند. بنابراین هرچند به شکل محدود و ناقص، برای خواننده‌ای مبتدی چون من، تصویری از جایگاه هر یک از این فلاسفه در کلیت اندیشه فلسفی، به دست می‌دهد. بیزر در پایان کتاب، فهرستی از آثاری تهیه کرده است که برای مطالعه بیشتر درباره هگل مناسب هستند و درباره هر کدام، توضیح مختصری نیز ارائه کرده که بسیار قابل توجه است. چنین کتاب‌هایی و ترجمه چنین کتاب‌هایی به فارسی، بیش باد!
