This book has some good common sense regarding the music business, and how to deal with getting gigs, management, and promotion.

One word: outdated. This book was last updated in 2003, so much of the advice bears very little fruit to those of us living in 2015. In this book, you will find no mention of streaming, YouTube, Spotify, or even iTunes. While some of the marketing advice still resonates, it does little to help bands/musicians who are just starting their career. Much time is spent on mid- to high-level performers who have already achieved a solid success rate. I had relatively high expectations of this book and was extremely disappointed. After drudging through the first 120 pages or so, I quickly became much more selective of the parts I read in full, skipping several chapters entirely. Again, this book may have been mildly useful in 2003-- it's next to worthless today. I will give credit to the author for being genuinely encouraging without being unrealistic or sugar-coating the harsh realities of the music business. It's a tough egg to crack and it's nice to have an industry professional provide an understanding yet firm tone. In the end, you're better off spending your time practicing than you are reading this book.
