This 1969 minor classic text is less about 'political elites' or politicians per se than it is about elite theory - that set of debates in both political 'science' and political theory/philosophy concerned with the extent to which society is (and, to a lesser extent, should or should not be) governed and controlled by a small 'elite'; and to what extent that elite might be considered cohesive, conscious and conspiratorial. It remains an excellent summary and consolidation of this material, and I learned a lot from it. It may in part be a reflection of my (lack of) interest in large aspects of these debates but it couldn't be called a riveting read; it is, moreover, decidedly lacking in terms of overall shape or 'take' on the material - Parry discusses the material insightfully, but rarely offers any opinion upon it nor argues for a particular view towards it. So it lacks drive and momentum as an argument, because no real argument is offered. Still it offers an excellent introduction to a set of issues and debates that I knew too little about.

I felt as if this book was something that they would use in high school to prep someone for college English. It was very simple and plain spoken. I was quite bored by it as I felt that I learned all of this in 8th grade. Rather disappointed after getting psyched about having an English class, only to find out that I was doing high school review. The class was very slow as one or two people held up the class each day and the reading that was assigned per week was easily done on a lunch break. I can see where this book would have been very helpful to others that struggle with English or someone that has been out of school for many years, but it just wasn't what I was looking forward to. I like to feel challenged in my classes, by my assignments and this book did not fulfill that need.
