Review # 1 was written on 2015-11-07 00:00:00 John Corrigan Really could have more theory in it, which is surprising to hear myself say. However, the essays included offer a diverse and interesting approach to examining how this country's vision of masculinity has been so carefully tied to its social and political history. Masculinity is seen more as an opportunistic reaction than anything else.

Review # 2 was written on 2013-05-02 00:00:00 Roy Tsukishima Very good, extensive study of the life of the eighth President, Martin Van Buren. While a little slow at some points, the book picked up particularly for me when Van Buren became Jackson's Secretary of State. Niven did a good job at portraying Van Buren as a person who, while possessing some admirable qualities, also having his flaws and shortcomings. The reader gets a feel for Van Buren as a career politician, driven by the give and take of political negotiations.
