Review # 1 was written on 2014-07-01 00:00:00 Jose Comoda I had no idea what a minbar was, nor about the history behind the minbar at Saladin. Nor that it was burned down by some misguided miscreant. This book gives a readable background on Islamic art, its symbolism, and how the traditions of creating it have almost been lost. Who would have guessed that the Prince of Wales would be its savior? All that's fine and good. My favorite part of the whole book is the essay on pages 106-123. It shows and explains in detail how circles and lines are used to construct some of the most beautiful, and markedly Islamic, patterns in the world. Absolutely delicious stuff. |
