Read this one twice now and still not much closer to understanding what its thesis is other than the too obvious point that noir appeared in film and literature because american culture is at root noir. The chapters are a tough slog because their academic style is further hampered by these being repurposed lectures/commissioned essays. So while they are full of fascinating insights, they are not structured as tightly reasoned arguments as much as they are performance displays of interesting evidence. Great chapter, however, on the fetish qualities of Barbara Stanwyck's anklet in Double Indemnity. Will try to parse this one again, though, because I do think some interesting and off the normal track topics about film noir are discussed.

A film book that documents the various aspects, location and subject matter of the film noir genre.
