A wonderfully exhaustive book, covering 250+ years of prose, poetry, and theater. Don't let the size of the book intimidate you. Keene's prose flows easily, and you can read a hundred pages without a pause. Plus as it's broken into sections by time period and genre, you can read about one genre you care about now and leave others for when you're in the mood for them. It's a shame that some of his favorite works are either not available in English or are long out of print. I was hoping to add more to my To-Read shelf than I was able to.

Good survey. Many summaries of important works requiring some background to appreciate. Interesting biographies. Origins of haiku and kabuki especially interesting to me.
