Review # 1 was written on 2017-09-17 00:00:00 Harry Imdo Rene Dubos was known for discovering the first proto-antibiotic, and in this book he coined the phrase "think globally, act locally." A brilliant, polymathic guy who offers readers a number of insights on biology, environmentalism, technology and its impact on our culture and happiness, and some eclectic reading recommendations (ranging from John Ruskin and Henry Adams, to Sartre and Camus, to Nicholas Rescher, others). In general, however, you have to be patient and really, uh, strip-mine this book for the nuggets of gold: they're in there, but the book is otherwise uneven and repetitive. |
