Review # 1 was written on 2014-02-05 00:00:00 William Ferullo Lavishly illustrated, this is a study of the evolution of the British Museum's ancient Egyptian collection from the hoarding of elite collectors like Sir Hans Sloane to nationalistic trophies to didactic displays, whose development parallels both the understanding of ancient Egypt and theories of pedagogy and education. |
Review # 2 was written on 2017-01-26 00:00:00 Tim Wiseman I had to read Chapter 3 for my Egyptology class, so that is what I'll review. Moser provides us with a wonderful account of how the British Museum acquired its large Egyptian exhibit. It is very interesting to consider that something that we have all come to regard as consecrated and established, as Ancient Egypt being given its own exhibition rooms, was not as straightforward as one might initially think. It is also worth considering that Egyptology in the 19th century was more about hating the French than loving the Ancient World. |
