This volume began with the uprising of the Moriscos in southern Spain and the appearance of Philip's illigitimate half-brother Don John of Austria, who becomes the hero. Don John continues to battle the Islamic Turks in shifting alliances with the Vatican and Naples. Some things never change — religious-based massacres and ethnic cleansing similar to stories in today's news. My first introduction to William Hickling Prescott, who was an amazing character himself. I learned of this three-volume set from the "Notes and References" section of Abraham Pais's autobiography A Tale of Two Continents. This copy of the third edition was the only holding at the Seattle Public Library that wasn't reference only.
