This book has lots of good dilemmas to consider and ways to consider them. Here are some of my takeaways: • An argument is not two people yelling at each other. “What we mean by ‘argument’… is a reason or a series of reasons which aim to support a particular claim, which is called the conclusion” (p. 5). • Then, what is a principle? “A principle is a general rule or recommendation which applies to a number of specific cases… Principles can be closely related to moral concepts” [but are not synonymous with them]” (p. 28). • In the ethics courses I teach, I remind participants that lying is as much about acts of omission as acts of commission. But, there may be times when lying is not wrong. “Withholding information is just the same as lying. Lying is wrong, So withholding information is wrong… suppose you knew that a Jewish family such as Anne Frank’s family in Amsterdam were hiding from the Nazis, and you were asked about their whereabouts. Would it be wrong to say that you didn’t know where they were, even if you did?” (p. 33-34). • In optimizing strategy for decision making: consider why a decision is necessary (is it necessary?); list the options (i.e. the various possible courses of action); and for each option: list the consequences; consider how likely they are to occur; consider how important each consequence is; and decide whether each of the listed consequences counts for or against the option. (p. 92-93) • What is a concept? “a concept is an idea or a set of ideas associated with a particular word or phrase, and that at least one ethical concept—harm—is basic to the whole enterprise of moral reasoning, in that you could not be said to be engaged in moral reasoning at all if you took no account of it” (p. 109).

I started reading this book this October. I find this book less monotonous than others in the subject. Any one who likes to discuss over issues , examples is welcome!!
