Review # 1 was written on 2014-09-11 00:00:00 Kevin Wise Deswarte shows a remarkable control of the sources and an admirable courage at taking on a number of established ideas about the topic. His basic idea is to affirm both the idea of the reconquista and neo-gothicism, while showing that both ideas are more complex than normally presented. The reconquista is only part of a general restoration of the Visigothic kingdom, and that kingdom was not merely seen as Gothic, but also as a repository of Roman tradition. There are many fascinating analyses in this book, but I feel Deswarte pushes too hard the idea that one unitary ideology drove the development of the Asturian-Leonese monarchy, as opposed to seeing it as one among many competing influences. |
