Definitely an interesting look at some of the fiction written in Polish in the US in the years before World War II, but it's definitely a survey of the literature more than much else. It offers a glimpse mostly into some of the early publishing habits of the Polish-American community, and by the last chapter finally does venture into how this literature constructs the identity of who is and is not a Pole--though for much of the early part of the book, I found myself wondering how the title really connected to anything. Probably would be difficult to read and follow without some background knowledge on the history of what brought Poles to America and when; also would probably be difficult to read if one had no understanding of Polish (though there is a guide to how various letters and letter combinations are pronounced). All in all, a good book on a topic that seems quite rarely discussed, but it's not perfect. Then again, what is?

THE THE THE book on feminist literary criticism. It has everything from those crazy french feminists to very interesting criticisms on reading like a woman versus reading like a man.
