Wow. This was a great book. It delves into the cultural history of views on the menstrual cycle and how research of it has often been heavily influenced by the culture at the time. For instance....men used to argue that women were unfit to do heavy work because of their menstrual cycle; when one woman critiqued that view by pointing out women work in factories and rarely take days off of work, he rebutted it by saying 'oh actually no I meant mental work, like academia' and that argument was used as a way to keep women from attending university!!!!! Really good read and I highly recommend it, to fully understand how the patriarchy influences the field and study of women's health.

I am a little biased because the author is my doctor, but I have also struggled with menstrual cycle abnormalities my entire post-pubescent life. In this book, Booth not only explains the cycle, using the names of Greek goddesses to highlight each "phase", but she gives a practical guide to taking control of your own cycle and not letting it get the better of you (which I have been doing for so many years). This includes a proper diet, exercise, mental health, etc. She also details some of the "bad" effects of hormones and ways you can help to lessen those. She follows the Venus Week throughout the lifespan of your 20's, 30's, 40's and then through menopause. Whether your goal is to not get pregnant, get pregnant, increase your libido, get through menopause, or what have you, you can learn ways to achieve your goals in this book. I recommend this book for any woman, whether or not you have difficulties, as I'm sure you can learn something about your own "Venus" from reading it.
