Review # 1 was written on 2008-07-17 00:00:00 Peter Gratten indispensible for anyone engaged in a serious reading of PI. His use of Cavell's example of the "corsican brothers" (a test drive of what the other-minds skeptic supposes we lack) makes LW's sense of humanity, of what it means to share the intimacy of a world, vivid and clear. And check out the connection Mulhall makes (as an aside!) b/t the vision of language instruction opened up by PI and Rene Girard's work on mimetic desire---a new theory of evil, I think. Somebody should run with it.

Review # 2 was written on 2007-09-28 00:00:00 Charles Ice So I had to read this for my class "A Prehistory of Affect: Reading the Passions." It was a pretty panicked situation: I got randomly chosen to do a 30 minute presentation on this text... in the first week of my Masters. I had one week to read the Enquiry and prepare my presentation. It was incredibly stressful. I've never read philosophy, I'm very unfamiliar with the 18th century, and I had been out of school for year and a half. Talk about being kicked back into gear. I don't know how to "rate" this text. It's pretty readable which was nice and a lot of the ideas are interesting and make you think.. but then a lot of the ideas are cyclical and redundant or just kind of silly. Im giving it three stars because that's what it conjures up in my mind, but I'm not super sure what I'm judging that off of, honestly. It's a text that is more about the discussion it creates rather than a "i liked it/i didn't like it" binary. PS: The presentation went super well! I got an A! YAY!
