This is a book that will probably only appeal to a narrow demographic. Unfortunately for me, I fall into it: A brother with Fragile X Syndrome and carrier status inherited from my mother. Clare Dunsford has written an honest and sometimes lyrical memoir, and while it's important to note that every FXS kid is still an individual, there are a lot of things that had me nodding right along, behaviors I recognized for sure. Substitute game shows for Oprah, subtract the obsessive breaking of CDs from the endless music listening, tweak the social skills a bit and lower the verbal a little, and you've come close to knowing what parts of my childhood and teenage years were like. In other words, the utility of this book is to put the story out there, to make people feel less alone, and to give friends, family and loved ones a small understanding of what it's like. Dunsford is brave and forthcoming in her writing and it's to be applauded for that. Maybe I should write my own book about sisterhood and growing up as a carrier. Because I can't possibly be the only one of me out there.

I was asked to review this book for Nature. I accepted the assignment because it is a book about fragile X syndrome and I have a project about this condition. I was completely blown away - this is a phenomenal book - among the best I have ever read. Clare Dunsford is a masterful writer, but more than that - she is a truth-teller, a truth-seeker, and a revolutionary. Her ability to guide the reader through the experiences associated with having a child with fragile X is so exquisite, that even those with children with different conditions (I have two kids with pseudoxanthoma elasticum (PXE) ), will find their own story told. I have written my review, which is suppose to appear in the July issue of Nature. I have also decided, with my colleagues, to award Clare Dunsford the Genetic Alliance Art of Advocacy Award in July, at the Genetic Alliance Annual Conference (www.geneticalliance.org). Wow.
