Review # 1 was written on 2015-09-27 00:00:00 Bary Massey I often dislike rating books containing content I had difficulty following, but I decided to rate the book anyway in this case even if I'd probably need to read the book at least one more time to understand all the material included (in part on account of not having spent enough time on the material included in some of the more technical chapters; I skipped a few of the proofs). The book deals with statistics and mathematics, but there's a lot of logic/philosophy in there as well - too much for my taste, which was part of the reason why I did not give the book a higher rating (that said, I was close to four stars and I may yet change my mind and give it four stars...). Although there's a lot of good conceptual coverage here, many of the specific problems related to the use of statistics 'in practice' in scientific fields today (underpowered studies in fields like psychology, replication issues in multiple fields, the mindless use of significance testing, unaddressed model selection issues, etc.) are not really addressed in the book at all, nor are attempts to deal with these issues (meta-reviews, publication protocol changes, etc.); I felt the coverage was at least 'one step too far away from the science' and 'one step too close to ('pure') philosophy'.

Clear, understandable, containing loads of examples and exercises to grasp the basics. After this you may embark on Saunders' book. After all, Awodey was a doctoral student of Saunders'.
