I don't read much romance, so I have to wonder if the complicated, passionate, crazy relationship between these two was the stuff of inspiration for romance writers. If not, it easily could be. It feels strange to be an interloper peeking into the private letters of these two legends but at the same time I couldn't help but continue reading. I would recommend this to anyone who is interested in Irish history, particularly the struggle for national autonomy and self-government. Anyone looking for a true story of doomed love will probably enjoy it as well.

Interesting. Would she be remembered if not for Yeats' obsession? Probably not, unless you were an historian interested in her role in the Irish Independence movement. For anyone interested in Yeats the book is probably compulsory reading. But her letters reveal a strong willed woman, committed to her beliefs, ready to act on them and so much more than the comic caricature, Maud Gone Mad. My only criticism of this edition, which not only has the editor's introduction but an essay by her granddaughter, and narrative paragraphs which put the letters into context, is that the index has a list of illustrations and the book has no illustrations.
