Review # 1 was written on 2013-11-07 00:00:00 Cedric Andersen There is good information in this book, originally published in 1963, and Eckstein clearly put in a lot of work to compile the data and anecdotes from numerous publications and other records. But rather than tell any kind of narrative, he was content to simply dump numbers and dates and dry facts into page after page, capping it off with some sadly typical racism for the era about the "emotional instability of the Negro." If you need to know more about Churches of Christ in Texas, this book is a must-read. Unfortunately, that says more about the state of scholarship in this area rather than the quality or readability of this work.

Review # 2 was written on 2012-03-05 00:00:00 Ernst Anderson This is one of those cool books that sits quietly on the children's shleves in the library but is actually appropriate reading for all ages. I read this book aloud to a client in her 80s and we BOTH enjoyed it and learned new things. The illustrations were ptetty good, too. The only part that didn't seem up to par was the timeline along the bottom of the pages because it was annoyingly random!
