Review # 1 was written on 2011-07-26 00:00:00 Nils Lommerin Honestly this is a somewhat dated collection of the experiences of a ~*~somewhat~*~ affluent (relative term, honestly) group of trans women but manages despite being written in fucking 1981, let me repeat NINETEEN EIGHTY-ONE, manages to be a better treatment of transsexual / transgendered populations than *many* of the popular accounts including (and this is such a low bar) not dead naming or misgendering people? Is it depressing that a book that came out 2 years after the Transsexual Empire (and cites it and very gently and charitably dismisses the claims of Raymond's that veer anywhere near reality) impressed me by doing that? Or that Bolin seems extremely sympathetic and open minded to the women she interacts with? This isn't a diverse sample and quite a bit of the medical information is dated (i.e. antiandrogens weren't used in HRT) but it actually *is* a great example of how to write about a maligned population without being a cheerleader or a demagogue and it is depressing that attempts to produce a similar work have vastly overstated their applicability (*cough Anne Lawrence cough*) or used an even smaller sample size (*cough J Michael Bailey cough*) and thinking about that is just profoundly depressing?

Review # 2 was written on 2013-03-16 00:00:00 Tomas Klang يتناول الكتاب تاريخ العربية بدءاً من عصر النهضة الذي يؤرخه ألبرت حوراني عام 1798 أي مع الحملة البونابرتية على مصر والذي ينتهي عام 1939 أي مع اندلاع الحرب العالمية الثانية. إن الأفكار السائدة في ذلك الوقت كانت تدور حول الفكر السياسي والاجتماعي. وانطلاقاً من هذه الفكرة استهل حوراني كتابه بمقدمة عن تاريخ الخلافة والحكم في البلدان العربية ليكمل بعدها متوسعاً في فترة عصرة النهضة. ما يميز هذا العصر هو وجود خطين فكريين أساسيين أحدهما يدعو للتجديد الإسلامي والعودة لجذوره الأولى والثاني هو التيار العلماني الذي يدعو لفصل سلطة الدين عن الدولة، الأمر الذي أدى مع عوامل أخرى لنشأة الحركة القومية المصرية أولاً والعربية بعد ذلك. بالطبع يتناول حوراني تلك الأفكار بشكل مفصل حيث يتحدث عن تأثر المفكرين بأوروربا الحديثة والأسباب التي دفعتهم للتساؤل عن كيفية التغيير الذي يقع على عاتقهم، كما يقف عند أغلب المفكرين الذي كان لهم دور جوهري في تلك الفترة مثل الأفغاني، محمد عبده وتلاميذه رشيد رضا ولطفي السيد، بالطبع لم ينس علي عبد الرازق والبستاني والشدياق، مع ممثلي العلمانية مثل شبلي الشميل وفرح أنطون وحتى طه حسين. بالنسبة لي أرى الكتاب موضوع لدرجة بعيدة وأعتبره من أعظم الكتب التي تحدثت وأرخت لتلك الفترة، أنصح به بشدة لكل مهتم بالكتب الفكرية.
