Review # 1 was written on 2009-07-08 00:00:00 Daniel W George Not my cup of tea Before readers place too much stock in this lukewarm review, one should realize, this book turned out to be a mismatch for my expectations. Not to say there's an absence of positive merit: hypotheses that state our behavior is produced solely by culture or solely by biology are dismissed as they should be; the cultural continuum with some animals as well as early humans had its moments; and the section on religion, art and language was replete with interesting tid-bits, most noteworthy, the ritual burial practice of Neanderthals. However, high expectations for this subject treated in a popular manner by an expert digging in the field, clashed with what was instead a highly academic survey of other researcher's hypotheses, peppered with insults for those the author disagreed with. The usual caveats and uncertainties associated with social studies were so thick and at times seemingly unending, one could wonder if there was any point in covering that aspect of an argument. A book probably better suited for those in sociology or related fields, looking for literature on the subject as the bibliography is broad. Again, this opinion is from one who expected something else, so, "a grain of salt" might be appropriate.
