Review # 1 was written on 2015-01-23 00:00:00 Jesus Rios Most of this 16th-century book is a collection of sixty essays about topics related to the Hebrew Bible. Many of them are on topics of very narrow interest, such as the antiquity of Hebrew vowels, the vestments worn by ancient Hebrew priests, the number of Second Temple-era Persian kings, and the number of high priests who served in the Second Temple. But other essays deal with issues that even today are somewhat controversial (at least within traditional Judaism), such as whether the Talmud's nonlegal statements are literally true. De Rossi, like medieval Jewish leaders such as Maimonides, took a rationalistic position,, arguing that since the ancient rabbis did not claim to be experts on science or history, their nonlegal statements need not be swallowed whole. And instead of relying solely on rabbinic scholarship, De Rossi also considers the views of pre-Mishnaic Jews such as Philo and Josephus, and (on historical issues) Christians and even Roman pagan historians. For example, one rabbinic legend states that Titus (a Roman emperor who participated in the destruction of the Second Temple) was killed by a gnat that entered his nostril. De Rossi points out that no historian writing near the time of Titus' death suggested as much, and adds that this legend also existed about Antiochus Epiphanes (an anti-Semitic Syrian king 200 years earlier). De Rossi suggests that the purpose of this legend was to show that wickedness is punished. The Talmud also suggests that the world might "lie desolate" (according to one translation) after 6000 years from the first Jewish year (or just over 200 years from now). De Rossi rejects the most literal interpretation of this statement, because both the Talmud itself and the Torah suggests that God shows kindness to more than a thousand generations (or 20-30,000 years from the first Jewish year). De Rossi also attacks the misuse of numerology to calculate when the Messiah would come, pointing out that great sages such as Rashi and Ramban calculated that the Messiah would come in 1358. So if they were wrong, how can any later thinker's calculations be trusted?

Review # 2 was written on 2018-06-25 00:00:00 William Hickey على عكس جميع الناس عندما اقرأ كتاب كهذا فأنا لا أبكي وإنما أضحك :) إسرائيل شاحاك-على فكرة إسرائيل تعني عبدالله بالعبرية- يهودي بولندي يعيش في فلسطين المحتلة...وقد سبق له أن عمل في الجيش الإسرائيلي...يكشف في هذا الكتاب عن مدى تأثر السياسة الإسرائيلية وتمسكها بتعاليم الديانة اليهودية المتمثلة في التلمود أكثر منها في التوراه يقول شاحاك بأن التعاليم اليهودية- المحرفة طبعاً- تقضي بضرورة إسترداد اليهود لحدودهم التاريخية بأي ثمن...هذه الحدود تمتد من العراق والكويت وجزء من المملكة السعودية شرقاً... لتشمل لبنان وسوريا والأرد وفلسطين وجزء من مصر وحتى تركيا وقبرص وبما إن غير اليهود كالكلاب في نظر الشخصية اليهودية المتدينة...لذا يكون إستراد هذه الأرض بقوة القتل والتنكيل أمر واجب ولابد منه يستعرض شاحاك في الكتاب شكل الرؤية اليهودية تجاه العالم الغير يهودي...ويغوص في أعماق التاريخ اليهودي القديم بما يحمله من أحقاد تجاه الأمم والشعوب الأخرى-بمعنى إن الحقد اليهودي هو نوع من الحقد التاريخي المجمع والذي لا يزال يبث في صدور الناشئة في المدارس والمنشآت التعليمية-... كما يستعرض أيضاً كيف أستخدم اليهود الصهاينة حالات الأضطهاد -الفردية- المبررة تجاههم تحت مسمى اللاسامية لتبرير الفضائع التي يرتكبونها تجاه الشعب الفلسطيني الكتاب رائع بحق ويحمل تنبيه لجميع العرب والعالم أجمع من خطر العنصرية الصهيونية ما خرجت به من هذا الكتاب هو رؤية جديدة للقضية الفلسطينية...وجهة نظر أعمق عن اليهود واليهودية والصهيونية...ورغبة عميقة وصادقة بتثقيف ولو جزء بسيط من العرب بحقيقة أن لا سلام معهم ولاتعايش *** أضحك حينما أقرء مثل هذا الكتاب حتى لا أموت كمداً وهماً ودمتم سالمين
