Unique perspectives of people and places caught up in the horrors of the civil war that you don't find in traditional battle- focused narratives. Written by 2 William & Mary historians.

*Disclaimer: Scott and Dr. Sheriff were my advisors in grad school* A People at War is a strong synthetic survey of the US Civil War's social history. Well-suited for an undergraduate course, it foregrounds the experiences and voices of those often given short shrift in traditional histories on the subject and provides a valuable introduction to an ever-growing body of scholarship.
