Review # 2 was written on 2014-05-28 00:00:00 pui ho ip Roswell Lamson was in the right places at the right times to witness some exciting parts of the Civil War. Luckily, many of his letters to and from his two girl friends [one later to be his wife] and his father survived to be the basis of this book. While he occasionally exaggerates facts or got them wrong based on the reports of third parties, enough was factually correct that you can believe his overall versions of things, especially when he was an eyewitness. He offers his opinions of a few higher officers, and history has generally supported his views, so again it was not just back-room gossip. Whether trying to catch blockade runners or while serving in the rivers of Virginia, Lamson was involved in combat, chases and explosions. He received only minor wounds during the war, but his poatwar life was a painful anticlimax, including great sadness. Well worth reading if you're interested in the naval history of the Civil War. |
