Not a bad read, but not really gripping. Summing up the life of Granville Stuart, and his brother to a large degree (who died much earlier), who helped "settle" Montana. He was involved in a vigilante posse, and you do get a sense of what western movies portray the West as during this time, but of course real life isn't quite like the movies. It's strange to me how they moved all over, just building log cabins wherever they were, dealing w/temps below freezing, and somehow surviving well enough to write detailed diaries, have a family, and seem to enjoy life.

An expansive history of Iowa native Granville Stuart who left for the gold fields of California and ended up moving through Utah and Montana. He served as an ambassador in South America. He had both an Indian and later a white wife and his views on the race of his children are a point of concern for the authors.
