Review # 1 was written on 2017-02-08 00:00:00 Songmei Wong A learn to read book using full color pictures of Marion Jones engaged in various track activities. Leveled at F/142 from Fountas and Pinnell these small paperbacks feature beautiful pictures of Marion Jones. The simple text closely mirrors the photographs while stating the obvious as in, "Marion works out to stay in shape. Staying in shape helps Marion run fast." "Marion is also a great jumper. Marion jumps high." I question whether these books help with reading skills since they lack repetition of sounds but perhaps at this level it is more important to sound out new words. These books are probably very good for teaching certain strategies and sight words but would not be appropriate in a library for several reasons. The paperback stapled construction would not last long or be easy to shelve, and the story lacks verve. I doubt a child would pick this book up without being directed to do so. It fails to inspire love of the written word or a desire to find more like it. Reviews: I was unable to locate any reviews of this book.

Review # 2 was written on 2020-10-02 00:00:00 James Mann I encourage parents and educators to check out several picture book biographies when wanting to teach students about a historically important individuals. My daughter and I have read several of these small biographies on Sojourner Truth and each on adds something that the ones before had not included. Also, allowing for that fantastic repetition of facts to hopefully work like glue to make it all stick. This would be a wonderful addition to any elementary library or classroom as it had much information on this remarkable woman.
