Wow that was a slog...only took me over six months...as with other academic books that I read for pleasure, this review is mainly based on entertainment value and presentation, not the information and research that went into it. There is a lot of info in this book that may be of use to many individuals...but for reading purposes this book is rough because it is soooo dense. I have background knowledge of most of these topics and still struggled to pay attention, I read swaths of the book with absolutely no retention. Unlike other reviews, this book is not concise. I also would never assign it for a class unless I wanted to make sure that none of my students did the reading. I've read other books on the same topic(s) that were much more enjoyable.

An excellent overview of world history since the end of World War 2. Well-crafted, balanced, with attention to areas like post-1960 Africa that too often get short shrift in survey texts. If I were still teaching freshman History, I'd certainly assign this as a Modern World History text, and I'd use it as a supplementary text for higher-level classes. I'm especially pleased with Keylor's take on post-2001 events and his attention to the strengths and weaknesses of using states as the primary actors in a post-Cold War and post-11 Sept. world. Worth having as a reference for anyone intersted in contemporary history.
