I read this in my enviromental ethics class (No duh?) The content is very precise and intense. A book to defitnally take your time with. Bruce Mortio comes with all guns drawn and trys to be as detailed in every aspect he can about his view on what ethics should be and the world, he sees, as a whole. An amazing read from an amazing writer. This is a philosphy text though, unlike Macevelli's: "The Prince", or Tom Regan's: "Case for Animal Rights", where reading and understanding can be accomplished without a philosophical background already taken root in the reader; Bruce Morito's--truly--epic, is one where a background in writers such as Tom Reagan, Plato, Peter Singer, Aldo Leopold, and more in the field of metaphyics, epistemology and ethics, are required. *I am in need to read this again, as I am with many of my philosophy texts, to get a better understanding, and to then give a review (because this isn't a review, it is an inticment and a warning).*

Update 9/3/09 - I've presented a few papers on the book, all on roughly the same theme: hanging the significance of science on "natural curiosity" is a failing strategy. Starting to think more about part II of the book, which I also think is a failure (but an interesting one), and what we can do for an alternative. This is going to be the next text in my grad seminar. We'll see how it goes. Original review: This book is very accessible to a wide audience, which is great. And it is pointing out a serious and important task. It ultimately fails to live up to its task, I think, but the failure is interesting. A worthwhile read, and an important book for years to come.
