Review # 1 was written on 2014-02-20 00:00:00 Asdf Asdf Very comphrehensive volume offering a heavily Schenkerian approach to the voice leading issues... Includes for me very unusual techniques and views still based on the classical "Fuxian" counterpoint, but taking it in unexpected direction ("prolonged counterpoint"). If you don't have at least basic comprehension of Schenkerian thinking and methods, it's not book for you. |
Review # 2 was written on 2015-09-17 00:00:00 Joshua Gallaudet Nice theoretical work. Kind of pointless and relatively useless to contemporary composers (i.e. hypermodernists, new complexity, avant-garde, serialist composers). This is the go to book for most first year music programs. I have to admit I learned way more from gigging and listening to records, but this is still essential for anybody who wants to study music composition. You have to at least know what kind of music you don't want to write. |
