I haven't read anything specifically tagged as "African American Literature" in a long time, and would have to say that while I enjoyed this and believe the author is talented, I'm not sure it ranks up there with "literature." It was a cleverly rendered story but it's biggest strength was the depth to which the author knew his main character - he (male author) really had written a vibrant, believable female lead for the story...interestingly, the entire book focused mostly on strong, black females with men playing a much more tertiary role. Basic plot outline- Deneen, a 30 something, gets dumped by her boyfriend and goes into a mid-life type crisis, where she moves back in with her mother and 12 year old half sister, who is into pageants (hence, the "All American Dream Dolls" the name of the pageant she competes in.) So the whole story in essence is Deneen trying to figure out her place in the world, and her place in the family, and eventually getting herself healed enough mentally and emotionally to move back to her home in the Twin Cities and get on with her life and career. Entertaining enough summer reading but not likely to perch in the upper echelons of black literature - I don't imagine we'll see Haynes shelved next to Alice Walker anytime soon.
