Review # 1 was written on 2021-04-13 00:00:00 Laurie Maclennan It is so useful to have a book of poetry arranged according to country when you are in my field. This book is a bit older. Many of the poets came of age during the duopoly of the Great Wars and they are definitely informed by the travails of the 20th century. It's wonderful to be able to reference Celan, Lorca, and Neruda in a single volume, not to mention so many incredible international poets I'd never heard of. Junkin's introductions to each poet is concise and enlightening; he gives a very brief biography of the artist and then renders in a single paragraph an astute description of the poet's work. It's amazing how a single paragraph written by a brilliant scholar can help the reader marvel at the poems that follow. I really appreciate this book. |
Review # 2 was written on 2013-08-24 00:00:00 Gregory White Okay read. Various authors from around the world. Many of the poems too abstract--I like poems that tell a story--for me, many of them did not. |
