In The American Past, U.S. history is presented in a unique way that helps the reader link past events to the present reality of today. Conlin’s format is one of presenting the information through the different views of the various peoples and the systems they create. He has presented the history with an ideological view in the first chapter and a political view in the next, followed by an economic view and in still another he presents the interconnected human and socio-cultural relationships. In doing this, he encourages the reader to flash back to what was presented in earlier chapters, relating and linking changes in systems: economic activity to political change, political change to ideology, etc. The reader becomes aware of how changes within individual systems interact with one another and impact individual lives and communities both, sometimes in unintended ways. Readers learn that it is the result of many processes happening simultaneously that bring economic, political and military events into being. Conlin’s distinctive presentation of history tells a more complete holistic picture of the past and demonstrates how each individual, (and their ideas and opinions) contribute to the whole – the good, the bad, and the ugly, and the reader is able to easily conclude that this fact is still true today.
