Review # 1 was written on 2011-08-03 00:00:00 Tho Do An excellent account of the bias shown in reporting women captured by the Maori during the 1800s as a result of the conflict between Pakeha (white settlers) and the indigenous Maori. This book clearly explains how accounts reported in the European press were slanted to detail how European white males were the "saviours" of these women, with little merit or understanding given the to the reality or words coming from the women themselves. Superb. |
Review # 2 was written on 2020-09-11 00:00:00 Olukemi Folarin I want to mention that this book is not a mere narrative history of the early exchanges between Maori and Europeans (namely the British although the Dutch do fit in a bit), but is instead better read as a study of European and Maori forms of knowledge. Europeans and Maori had very different ways of seeing the world and, to make cultural contact meaningful, they had to reconcile these with one another. If read with this in mind, the book essentially becomes a work of art. |
