Wilson, K. (2003). Sweet Briar Goes to School. New York: Penguin Group Beautiful watercolor Illustrations by LeUyan Pham. A wonderful story of a young sweet skunk that goes to school and everyone in class makes fun of her because she smells like a skunk. The other animals in the class sing terrible songs about her, do not include her in recess, and move their desks away from her. Her teacher attempts to stop the bullying when it starts but it gets worse when she steps out of the classroom and during recess. Sweet Briar goes home from school each night and is sad, her parents can't figure out what is wrong. One day at school during recess, a wolf attacks one of the worst bully's of them all, but Sweet Briar puts up her tail and sprays the wolf right in the eyes so he is forced to let go of the captured student and they run to safety. Sweet Briar has saved the day and the teacher has the whole class write nice thank you letters to her to make up for all the mean comments they made prior. Now Sweet Briar is loved by all and has many friends at school. What a great story! I would read this over and over to students. It can not be said enough that bullying is a trending bad habit in schools and is only getting worse. By repeatedly reading this to your students you can ingrain them with knowledge to stop bullying. It will show them the effects it has on the victims and how we should learn to accept everyone for who they are. I wish the teacher in this would have done more but overall a wonderful message to present to your children, grandchildren, or students.

This is such a very adorable book! My 2 year old granddaughter and I completely enjoyed not only the story but the illustrations as well. This is a great book for a child starting school being insecure and scared. But also a very great book for being bullied. Sweet Briar is a skunk. Her parents love her very much and named her after the most sweetest thing they knew and that was the sweet briar roses that smelled so sweet and was so pretty. Sweet Briar grew up happy and became old enough to go to school. When she gets there no one wants to be her friend when the teacher is out of ear shot they make fun of her and make her feel horrible. This goes on for several days and her parents worry about her because they know something isn't right at school. However on the next day they are allowed outside to play. BUT as the meanest kid is calling her names a big wolf jumps out and captures him! Everyone is scared except Sweet Briar she knew exactly what to do! She not only saved the little boy (although he had been nothing but mean to her) but the entire class as well. They then realize that she is in fact as sweet as her name and it's not what a person looks like that makes them a friend but what is on their heart! A really very well written book that I will add to our list for our own private library.
