Good book exploring the relationship between language and learning in the classroom. The author uses his own experiences in different types of schools across Britain, and also incorporates research from other linguists, psychologists, and those involved in child development and learning, to support his contentions. Following his arguments, it is easy to see the relationships between various group pressures, and the child's development in acquiring complex language skills, a sense of worth, and also making educational progress. Sometimes he suggests, the classroom environment, instead of fostering growth in these areas, can be the cause of inhibiting it.

Although quite outdated (first published in 1972), the philosophy and analysis of the classroom and what intricate relashionships form within its boundaries are still pertinent today. Through past experiences in all sorts of schools over Britain, mixed with theoretical discussions from a wide range of searchers, Creber brings to light the importance of language in children's development. Interesting for teachers, parents, or any person working with children, this book focuses on the humanity of a learning child, and how it is all too easy to forget when teaching.
