c1965. I loved this book. Set out in a gazeteer format - some of the comments are hugely humourous which makes a book that could be quite boring into an absolute delight. An example " frilly C19 bell-turrett". "Do not be put off by the horrible restoration of 1867" and one of my favourite lines on Arundel Castle " There is no getting away from the fact that Arundel Castle is a great disappointment. The fault is that of the C19 which would not leave well alone, and to a humble mixture of medieval ruins and C18 brickwork added first of all silly but spirited Gothic additions of 1791-1815." another great line. "Another example of the local school of carvers adapting Renaissance motifs , here in the most childlike way, along with the familiar vine-trail. Everybody kneeling: Sir John with seven sons, his wife Alice with seven daughters. Poor Alice! Like the Brass, no charm to compensate for the roughness." I have got to own this book.
