This is a good book to challenge the stereotypical idea that all people in Africa live in mud huts and would be interesting to share with children and listen to their discussions about it. I would use this book alongside images of African villages and do a project with the class exploring the differences and talking about culture.

First published in Southern Africa under Songololo Books in 1990, Red Fox republished it in the UK two years later bringing on board Niki Daly. It tells the story of Ashraf, a young boy who lives in a city 'at the very tip of the great African continent'. He reads and dreams of seeing the fabulous animals which are synonymous with Africa and yet remain very far away from him. I loved this little picturebook. I don't think it has been produced well and more could have been done in marrying word and image in a more engaging way but here is a true and authentic representation of African culture and society. As Ashaf heads to the library, we are greeted by street vendors, original music players and storytellers whilst still within a community that often feels close to our own. A refreshing change which challenges the stereotypes associated with this vast continent.
