A witch is confronted with a series of animals hoping to share her soup in this spooky lift-the-flap book, each one appearing under the next flap. "An old witch sat at home all alone, / Cooking and cooking... an old soup bone," the rhyming text begins, repeating the refrain - "And the wind blew all around the house. Shuuuuuuuuuu" - after each new verse. Despite declaring that she cannot eat all her soup herself without exploding, the witch proves unwilling to share, leading to the inevitable conclusion... Although apparently adapted from a longer poem by Bernice Wells Carlson, no source material for The Witch on a Windy Night is provided, making it difficult to track down the original. This adaptation by Bernice Chardiet is rather lackluster - sometimes I found the rhyme scheme a little forced, and the rhythm clunky - and was only saved by the colorful artwork, and the fun flaps. Children will find the interactive components here entertaining, and the artwork appealing, but I think far better witchy titles are to be had.
