Alice is a middle child. Her older brother teases her mercilessly because she cannot say the word "animal" correctly and her little sister is an out of control toddler. On a class outing, she settles on what she wants for her birthday. Alices brother gets his comeuppance as she names her new pet. This is labeled a low vocabulary, early reader chapter book. Alice, as a character, is sandwiched between two sibling extremes, which makes her most approachable and relatable for elementary children wrestling with identity. The book written within the confines of Alices life: school, home and birthday celebration, so the language is basic and kept in context. The illustrations are kept to a minimum but represent, to some extent, the context of story on the adjoining page. Interest Level: 2nd-5th Age: 8-12yrs Genre: Fiction Subject: Easy Reader Low Vocabulary Bulletin of the Center for Childrens Books on Alices Birthday Pig "Elementary-grade students, especially those with obstreperous sibs of their own, will undoubtedly relate to Alices difficulties and desires, and adults looking for a great little read-aloud will find this a perfect choice. Recommended."
