couldn't get the whole way through this guy before I had to return it to the library, but I'm not sure why it's fallen so out of favor. I first encountered a chapter from this book in an out-of-print anthology of 70s political theory I got for a buck in montreal. Maybe I'm just out of touch, but it definitely seemed that Barnet had some valuable things to say. although he's something of a loose cannon in places, he at least seems to be living in the same universe as the rest of us, which says a lot for a political theorist.

lays down the very plausible argument that US warmongering is very much a matter of protecting the property of US firms, especially through the imposition of authoritarians on other states. describes this process as 'bureaucratic homicide,' which is similar enough to arendt on eichmann, one supposes.
